Team Leadership/Management Style

Part 1: According to the Sarin and O’Connor (2009) article, certain style and goal structures of team leaders have a strong influence on internal team dynamics.  Based on your research within the article and textbook, as well as your own experience, what team leader management style would be most effective in leading a team in which you were a member?

Part 2: DeRue, Barnes, and Morgeson (2010) found that team leadership style effectiveness depended on the level of charisma exhibited by the leader.  Drawing from the article and the textbook, have you ever worked for a charismatic leader?  What style (coaching or directing) did that leader administer?  Was he or she effective in leading you as part of the team?

Part 1: According to the Sarin and O’Connor (2009) article, certain style and goal structures of team leaders have a strong influence on internal team dynamics.  Based on your research within the article and textbook, as well as your own experience, what team leader management style would be most effective in leading a team in which you were a member?

Both “Participative leadership or participation” and “Directive leadership or initiation of process” will be most effective for leading a team that I am part of it.

With “Participative leadership or participation” team members are involved in the process of making a decision. By involving team members while making a decision on the upcoming project or changing the design for the work that was already in flight, each member can provide all their ideas and based on those ideas presented by all members we can make a better decision on choosing the right one. In that way, all the members in the team know the process of completing the work and “participating the way the leader behaves towards others as well as his influence in the team members” (Sarin & Connor, 2009).

With “Directive leadership or initiation of process” a team leader will provide very clear performance objectives for the team. He will provide structure and skilled at clarifying each employee’s perceptions of their role. By providing clear work instructions, work that was completed by a member will be in an organized manner. Also, this will help the members on completing the work in a timely manner by solving any blocker by the team leader. With help “provided by a team leader in all work initiation process, work will be completed smoothly with following rules and regulations and maintaining performance standards” (Sarin & Connor, 2009).

It is absolutely correct that by charismatic leadership, the personal abilities of a leader are capable of having extraordinary and profound effects on the team members. In my current role, I can definitely say that I am working under a supervisor who is a charisma leader. With the skills, he shows which are particularly guided to improve the performance of the team members.

With the aim, he shown on us to “developer individual capabilities and the ability to work effectively with helping members to learn new and more effective team behavior” (Derue, Barnes, & Morgeson, 2010) shows he has a coaching style. He helps team members in their performance behavior and he is also more effective at fostering change and developing the team. Based on the charismatic leadership qualities I can confidently say he is effective in leading me as part of the team.
