Careers have characteristics and traits; these traits assist in essential clues about the nature of the work as well as the environment. They give an individual an opportunity to match his or her own personal interest in a specific career. When a person chooses a job in an industry that matches his or her personal interests, it is a step in the right direction and it promises a successful as well as a rewarding career. Currently, I am about to graduate and I work in an Emergency Management organization part-time. This is the career I would like to pursue in future and working part-time is preparing me for the real world and the responsibilities I will have to undertake once I am fully employed. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in emergency management and after graduation, I would like to specialize in Emergency Management and Recovery and be a Specialist.

An emergency management specialist has the responsibility of assisting government bodies as well as cities that are in preparation for a disaster, review of the emergency plans as well as working with administrators in social and government institutions to guarantee that the requirements of the citizens in time of disaster are met (Fagel, 2012). An emergency management specialist also administers for and manages grant capital for emergency planning and management efforts. Whether a disaster is caused by individuals or a natural disaster, an emergency management specialist is the first defence to respond. The job is very demanding and requires emergency management specialist to work full time which may include weekends and also cover overtime when a disaster happens one is required to work as well regardless of the schedule.

The job setting is usually in an office but some emergency management specialist may find it important to visit sites and locations for the local resources. The job can be very stressful, with a lot of pressure especially when disasters occur and there are emergencies. The decisions of many lives in the disaster are left to the emergency management specialist. Most people in this field are either employed by the local government or the state government. Federal Emergency Management Agency of The Department of Homeland Security is one of the organizations that do the hiring.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency of the United States of Homeland Security is an agency whose primary purpose is to organize a response to a disaster that has happened in the United States and has devasted the local as well as state resources (Agency, 2008). The agency responds to a request made by a state governor in a state that disaster has happened. The agency is responsible for the provision of relief funds as well as funds for rebuilding and providing experts who are specialists in specific fields. Additionally, the Federal Emergency Management supplies funds for training of response staff all over the United States and its domain as part of being ready for the agency.

This position will best support my professional path because this is the right career that I would like to pursue in the near future. This is the field that I have specialized in my graduate studies and to get an opportunity to work as an emergency management specialist would mould my entire career out and would give me better opportunities to further my career in future to even become a director of federal emergency of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
